10 Day Carnarvon Gorge & Longreach

Day 1.   Central Coast - Narrabri                      (B)

Departing the Coast this morning we travel out through Murrurundi, crossing the Breeza plains to Gunnedah and onto Narrabri for overnight.

Day 2.  Narrabri - Roma                               (BD)

Our journey today takes us into Moree, most famous for its artesian spa baths, Moree is the centre of the rich cotton, wheat and olive growing region.    Crossing the border into Queensland at Mungindi we travel the Carnarvon Highway into the irrigation area and the town of St George on the banks of the Balonne River.  Continue to Roma  for overnight.     Overlander Homestead

 

Day 3.    Roma - Carnarvon Gorge               (BLD)

This morning we visit to the Multi Million dollar ‘Big Rig” complex for a guided tour. This  complex shows Australia’s living history of oil and gas exploration. Spend time viewing the collection of intriguing stories, photos, facts and objects, in a variety of fascinating multi-media exhibits. Roma is a town full of history. The famous trial of Captain Starlight was held in Roma in 1872, the first Queensland wine making enterprise got under way in 1863 and Australia’s first natural gas strike was made on Hospital Hill in 1900.  Join the Carnarvon Development Road we make our way into Carnarvon Gorge National Park. Three (3) nights.

Day 4.  Carnarvon Gorge                             (BLD)

Carnarvon Gorge is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful scenic reserves in Australia.  We are back to nature    today as we explore the Gorge.  Take a guided bushwalk along the base or just take a leisurly stroll on your own.  There are wallabies, cockatoos and echidnas in the area as well as the chance to view a platypus.

 

Day 5.   Carnarvon Gorge                        (BLD)

Another day to explore the beauty of Carnarvon Gorge.  There are many walks you can enjoy including a walk to the Aljon Falls,  The Ampitheatre or the Moss Garden.  Walk at your own pace or just relax around the lodge.

 

Day 6.   Carnarvon Gorge—Longreach    (BD)

This morning we travel a short distance along the Dawson Highway through Rolleston and Springsure, joining the Gregory Highway to Emerald. 

At Emerald we join the Capricorn Highway passing through small towns such as Bogantungan and Alpha into Barcaldine.  A short drive then into Longreach  for our Two (2) nights stay.  Longreach Motor Inn

 

Day 7.  Stockmans Hall of Fame - Qantas Founders Outback Museum           (BD)

Today we discover two of our heritage centres with a visit to the Stockmans Hall of Fame and the Qantas Founders Outback Museum.  The Stockmans Hall of fame gives us a full history of the Australian cattleman and Bushman.  Enjoy some free time this afternoon to explore the township before making our way to a Outback dinner and show.

 

Day 8.     Longreach - Charleville     (BD)

Travelling the Landsborough Highway today we visit the town of Blackall, home of one of Austalia’s famous shearers, “Jackie Howe”.  Continue our journey  down through Tambo &  Augathella into Charleville

 

Day 9.  Charleville - Nyngan       (BD)

Travel through Cunnamulla before crossing the border back into New South Wales at Barringun. Visit the township  of Bourke for lunch before our afternoon drive to Nyngan for overnight.

 

Day 10.  Nyngan - Central Coast        (B)

Homeward bound today, passing through Dubbo and entering the Upper Hunter Valley.

Central Coast & Newcastle passengers
